The air in the community hall crackled with a nervous energy, the kind that usually precedes a particularly aggressive game of bingo or a lecture on the proper pruning of hydrangeas. Tonight, however, the jitters were amplified tenfold. The annual Community Chuckles Gala, Arthur Pendelton’s magnum opus, was about to commence. Arthur, resplendent in a sequined bowtie that seemed to have escaped from a particularly flamboyant disco ball, surveyed the scene with the serene confidence of a man who had single-handedly invented laughter.

“Eleanor, my dear!” he boomed, his voice echoing off the slightly-too-high ceilings. Eleanor Vance, clutching a clipboard like a shield, offered a tight smile. Her eyes, however, darted from the precarious stack of inflatable flamingos near the stage to the suspiciously damp patch on the ceiling above the popcorn machine. “Are we ready for a tidal wave of mirth?”

Eleanor adjusted her glasses, a practiced gesture that usually signified imminent exasperation. “As ready as we’ll ever be, Arthur. The flamingos are… secured. For now.” She discreetly nudged a wobbling flamingo with her foot, praying it wouldn’t spontaneously deflate and take out a small child.
