Chapter 5
Episode 5 the pregnancy
The celebration of their engagement had many people all their relatives of both sides c Conrad and Alicia weather happily when they work up to the stage everyone had made a toast they had skipped his toast then happily announced Clare was pregnant
The air in the grand ballroom buzzed with a thousand conversations, a symphony of clinking glasses and delighted laughter. Eli, a ghost at his own family’s celebration, nursed a drink, the ice melting into a watery oblivion. Conrad and Alicia, radiant and beaming, moved through the crowd, accepting congratulations like precious gifts. They’d just been called to the stage, their hands clasped, their smiles wide enough to eclipse the chandeliers. A series of toasts followed, each one a testament to their happiness, their love, their future. Eli, lost in the swirling vortex of his own regrets, barely registered the words. He’d been deliberately skipped, a deliberate omission that stung more than any spoken insult. Then, the announcement. A hush fell over the room, followed by a wave of gasps, then an explosion of applause. Claire, standing beside Bright, her hand resting protectively on her slightly rounded belly, was pregnant. The words echoed in Eli’s ears, a death knell for any lingering hope he’d dared to harbor. He watched as Bright, his arm possessively around Claire, beamed, a hero in his own narrative. Eli’s vision blurred, the opulent room dissolving into a haze of emerald green and sapphire blue, the colors of Claire’s dress, the colors of his own lost dreams. He turned, stumbling out of the ballroom, the joyous cacophony fading behind him, replaced by the hollow echo of his own racing heart.
