Two months had passed since the whirlwind of the wedding. The air, once thick with tension and unspoken words, had settled into a different kind of rhythm. Eli, still wrestling with the phantom ache of what might have been, found himself staring at an embossed invitation. It was elegant, understated, and bore a familiar, graceful script. Claire.

The invitation announced the birth of twins, a boy and a girl, and a celebration. The whole family was invited. Eli’s breath hitched. He scanned the guest list, his heart a frantic hummingbird. He was there. His name was there, nestled amongst the aunts and uncles and cousins. A wave of disbelief, then a fragile tendril of hope, unfurled within him. He reread the invitation, tracing the curves of Claire’s name. She had invited him. After everything, after the shouting, the banishment, the sheer, raw pain, she had invited him.

He arrived at the sprawling family estate, the same one where Conrad and Alicia had exchanged vows, where Bright and Claire were to have begun their married life. The grounds were alive with laughter and the murmur of conversation. Children chased each other across the manicured lawns, their shrieks echoing the joy of the occasion. Eli felt like an intruder, a ghost from a past that refused to fully dissipate. He clutched the small gift he’d brought, a carefully chosen wooden rattle, his knuckles white.
