Chapter 12
Episode 12
What does Eli do does he fight to stay with Claire will have to see
The weight of the past pressed down on Eli, heavy and suffocating. He’d spent the night before his final Masters exam in a haze of caffeine and desperation, the sterile glow of the library lamps doing little to dispel the shadows in his mind. Claire, bless her, had been a steady presence, her hand resting protectively on her swollen belly, a silent testament to the life that was growing between her and Bright. He’d tried to focus, to absorb the dense textbooks, but every line of text seemed to blur into a single, agonizing question: *What have I done?*
He remembered their shared nights in college, the late-night study sessions that had morphed into whispered confessions and stolen kisses. He’d been so driven, so consumed by his ambition, that he’d pushed her away, convinced that his dreams were more important, that she would understand. He’d been wrong. Terribly wrong. Now, seeing her with Bright, seeing the undeniable glow of impending motherhood, a pang of regret sharper than any he’d ever known twisted in his gut.
The exam itself was a blur. He’d scribbled answers, his mind a chaotic mess of academic theories and personal turmoil. He felt a flicker of hope when he saw William, Claire’s older brother, entering the examination hall. William, a doctor, had a reputation for being level-headed, and Eli clung to that as a lifeline. He’d approached Bright, his voice raspy, “So, how’s the baby?” He knew it was a loaded question, a subtle jab at the life that was blossoming between his brother and the woman he’d let slip through his fingers. William, overhearing, had immediately pulled Bright aside. Eli saw his brother’s face harden as William spoke, his words a low murmur that Eli couldn’t quite catch. He knew, though, that William was concerned. He’d seen the way Claire’s eyes had clouded over when she’d spoken of her Masters, and he’d warned Bright that she shouldn’t be under any undue stress, especially given the simmering tension between the brothers.
