Below them, the familiar, suffocating shores of Sparta receded, a phantom limb aching with the memory of a crown lost and a life shattered. Beside him, Lagertha’s gaze was fixed on the horizon, her weathered face a study in stoic anticipation. The cheers of their departing crew, a motley band of loyalists and those seeking a new dawn, had faded into the rhythmic sigh of the waves. This was not merely a flight; it was a conscious shedding of skin, a deliberate turning away from the gilded cage of their former lives.

“The sea is a harsh mistress, King Ioneus,” Lagertha’s voice, a low rumble like distant thunder, broke the silence. “She demands respect and offers little solace.”

Ioneus nodded, his hand instinctively going to the tarnished amulet hidden beneath his tunic. The cool metal was a constant reminder of the family he had lost, the faces that haunted his dreams, and the oath he had broken not by choice, but by necessity. “But she also carries us away from the rot, shield-maiden. And for that, I am grateful.” He glanced at her, noting the way her cloak billowed around her like the wings of a predatory bird, the calloused strength in her grip on the ship’s railing. She was a force of nature, untamed and unbound, and in her presence, the suffocating weight of his past seemed to lighten, replaced by a nascent sense of possibility.
