The salt-laced wind, once a herald of promise, now carried a discordant murmur. It whispered through the burgeoning marketplace of the Free State, not with the cheerful haggling of merchants or the excited chatter of newly arrived settlers, but with a different, more unsettling sound. It was the rustle of discontent, the sibilant hiss of doubt.

Ioneus felt it prickle his skin, a sensation eerily similar to the chill that had preceded his exile from Sparta. He stood on the high platform overlooking the central plaza, his gaze sweeping over the vibrant tapestry of peoples and goods that represented their hard-won peace. Yet, beneath the outward harmony, a disquiet was beginning to fester. He traced the worn scar on his left hand, a phantom ache reminding him of the treacherous currents that had swept him from his throne. This new unease felt like a familiar tide.

Beside him, Lagertha, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed against the bright sun, caught his unspoken concern. "The wind carries more than just the scent of spiced goods today, King," she said, her voice a low rumble, her gaze sharp as a hawk's. "There are shadows gathering at the edges of our light."
