Into the Whispering Woods
Heartbroken but resolute, Clara decides to seek the truth. Armed with ancient village lore, she ventures into the mysterious Whispering Woods, hoping to uncover the source of the blight.
The air in the village had grown thick with a fear that clung to everything like the morning mist. Clara felt it in the averted gazes, the hushed conversations that ceased when she drew near, the coldness that had replaced the warmth she had always known. Her heart ached, a dull, persistent throb that echoed the wilting leaves and the empty granaries. The whispers had grown louder, no longer mere murmurs but accusations, sharp and cruel, aimed directly at her. They said her strange affinity with the wild, her gentle way with wilting flowers and troubled birds, was the very thing that had cursed their fields.
Finn, his brow furrowed with a familiar protective anger, stood by her side, his hand resting on her shoulder. “Don’t listen to them, Clara. They’re scared. They don’t understand.”
Lyra, ever the pragmatist, wrung her hands, her eyes darting between Clara and the anxious faces of their neighbors. “But Finn is right, Clara. They’re looking for someone to blame, and it’s always easier to blame the one who’s a little different.”
