The forest floor, once a tapestry of dappled sunlight and fallen leaves, had become a treacherous maze. Each snapped twig, each rustle of unseen brush, was a drumbeat of terror in Ava’s ears. The screams of her friends, a symphony of panic that had ripped through the tranquil night, had faded into a haunting silence, leaving her adrift in a sea of her own fear. Her lungs burned, not just from the desperate sprint, but from the raw, primal scream that had lodged itself in her throat, refusing to escape. She stumbled, her ankle twisting on a gnarled root, and a sharp cry escaped her. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the searing pain, her eyes darting frantically into the oppressive darkness that pressed in from all sides.

Andrew. Where was Andrew? His booming laugh, his reassuring presence, had been her anchor. Now, the thought of him, of any of them, being hurt, was a cold dread that seeped into her very bones. She called his name, a desperate whisper that was swallowed by the immensity of the woods. No answer. Just the unnerving symphony of the night – the hoot of an owl, the distant cry of some unseen creature, sounds that had once been comforting now seemed to mock her isolation.

She pushed on, guided by a desperate instinct, a primal urge to put distance between herself and the horror that had shattered their idyllic escape. The image of the masked figures, their faces hidden but their intent chillingly clear, replayed in her mind with relentless clarity. They were hunters, and her friends, her family, were the prey. And now, she was alone, a solitary target in this vast, unforgiving wilderness.
