The air thrummed with a savage energy, a primal beat that wasn't the whisper of wind through ancient trees, but the ragged gasps of life teetering on the precipice. Andrew, his knuckles white against the rough bark of an oak, felt it vibrate through his very bones. The silence that had fallen after the frenzied chase and the gut-wrenching screams was a heavy shroud, thicker than any fog the mountains could conjure. It pressed in, stealing breath, amplifying the frantic pounding of his own heart. Beside him, Maya’s hand, usually steady, trembled as it gripped his arm, a silent testament to the terror that had stripped them bare.

They had done it. They had fought back. The clearing, once a stage for terror, was now a tableau of grim victory. The fallen figures, masks askew, lay still. The crude, unsettling masks, once symbols of an inhuman threat, now seemed pathetic, revealing only the ordinary, the disturbingly human faces beneath.

The first face Andrew truly registered belonged to the one they’d called ‘The Hunter.’ The mask, a crude imitation of a wolf’s snarling maw, had been torn away in the desperate struggle. Beneath it was a man, younger than Andrew had expected, his features sharp and gaunt, etched with a kind of feral desperation that mirrored the wilderness they’d been so eager to explore. His eyes, wide and unseeing, stared up at the indifferent sky. He’d been fast, unnervingly so, a phantom in the trees, but in the end, he was just flesh and bone.
