The image of her, a fleeting shadow swallowed by the encroaching darkness, was seared into Ava’s mind, a brand of horror she knew would never fade. The air, thick with the scent of pine and the metallic tang of fear, pressed in on them, stealing their breath, their hope.

Andrew, his face a mask of grim determination, his usual swagger replaced by a primal urgency, was already moving, his eyes scanning the perimeter, a desperate, futile search for a threat that had dissolved as quickly as it had appeared. “Chloe!” he roared, his voice strained, swallowed by the vast, indifferent woods. But there was no answer, only the rustling of leaves, the distant hoot of an owl, each sound a phantom whisper of the unseen enemy.

Maya, her hands slick with the blood that wasn’t hers, knelt by Brandon, his breath shallow, ragged. Her first-aid training, a secret she’d guarded with the same ferocity she now guarded Brandon’s fragile life, was a whirlwind of practiced efficiency. Bandages, pressure, a silent plea to the universe for a miracle. Her gaze, when it flicked to Andrew, was sharp, laced with a fear that mirrored his own, yet held a steely resolve. “We need to move, Andrew. Now.”
