Ava, her breath ragged, stumbled forward, Avery a tight knot of fear clinging to her arm. Andrew, ever the leader, scanned the open space, his brow furrowed with a suspicion that gnawed at the edges of his relief. Brandon and Benjamin, their faces gaunt with terror, followed close behind, their eyes darting into the shadowed treeline that ringed the meadow. Maya, her usual calm strained, kept a watchful eye on Noah, who was trembling, his athletic build doing little to disguise the quaking beneath his skin.

“It looks… safe,” Benjamin whispered, his voice cracking.

Andrew grunted, his gaze still sweeping. “Doesn’t feel safe.”
