The damp earth clung to Ava’s boots, each step a heavy, sodden sigh. The air, thick with the scent of pine and something metallic and sharp, pressed in on her. They’d found a hollow, a scar in the earth shielded by gnarled oaks, a place to lick their wounds. Andrew, his face a mask of grim determination, was tending to Noah’s gashed leg, his movements efficient, almost too practiced. Maya, her usual quiet hum replaced by a brittle stillness, watched, her eyes darting between Andrew and the flickering firelight. Benjamin, his broad shoulders slumped, stared into the flames as if seeking answers in their dance. Brandon, ever the restless one, paced the perimeter, a nervous energy radiating off him.
Ava hugged her knees to her chest, the rough wool of her blanket scratching against her skin. Chloe was gone. The thought was a cold shard in her gut. Gone. The word echoed in the cavern of her mind, a hollow, terrifying sound. She remembered Chloe’s wide, uncomprehending eyes, the way she’d stumbled, the sudden, brutal silence that had followed. And then, the chase.
“He’s gone,” Brandon announced, his voice rough. “The one with the burlap sack. I saw him melt back into the trees.”
