The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and the ghosts of forgotten rituals. Kenya, her heart a hummingbird’s flutter against her ribs, followed Katie through a jagged tear in the jungle’s verdant curtain. The path, if it could be called that, was a mere suggestion, a winding scar carved by time and the slow, inexorable creep of moss. Sunlight, fractured by the dense canopy, dappled the leaf-strewn ground in shifting patterns, like the fleeting memories of a dream.
“Are you certain this is the way?” Kenya whispered, her voice barely a breath against the symphony of insect chirps and unseen rustlings. Her fingers tightened around the rough leather pouch that held the Sunstone, its warmth a reassuring presence against her hip.
Katie, a silhouette of quiet strength, didn’t turn. Her gaze was fixed on some distant point, her movements fluid and economical. “The markings Elder Michelle described,” she said, her voice low and steady, “they align with the constellations as they would have appeared in this region centuries ago. The ruins lie in the valley beyond the Serpent’s Tooth peaks.”
