A Perilous Escape
The cult attacks, forcing Kenya and Katie into a desperate flight. Their initial distrust is challenged as they rely on each other to survive.
The air, thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and the distant murmur of the city, shattered with a guttural cry. Kenya’s heart leaped into her throat, a frantic bird trapped in her chest. Shadows detached themselves from the deeper darkness pooling in the alleyways, coalescing into figures cloaked and menacing. The cult. They had found her.
“Run!” Katie’s voice, sharp as obsidian, sliced through the sudden chaos. She shoved Kenya forward, a blur of motion as her own body became a shield against the first lunge of a hooded assailant. A wicked-looking bronze knife flashed, met by the gleaming arc of Katie’s shortened macuahuitl. The clang of impact echoed against the stone walls, a jarring counterpoint to Kenya’s ragged breaths.
Kenya didn’t hesitate. The Sunstone, tucked securely in the makeshift pouch against her skin, felt like a burning ember. Her legs pumped, carrying her away from the fray, her eyes darting between the narrow openings of the alley. She risked a glance back. Katie was a whirlwind of controlled fury, her movements economical and deadly. Two cultists lay stunned on the ground, but more were emerging, their eyes glinting with fanaticism.
