The air hung thick and heavy, not with the usual dust of their ravaged world, but with a palpable tension that prickled Kael’s skin. It was a scent he’d come to associate with danger, a metallic tang that mingled with the acrid stench of something unnatural. They were a day’s trek from Haven, their small, precarious settlement, following a trail of disturbed earth and snapped trees that spoke of something far larger and more deliberate than the usual skittering beasts. Lyra walked beside him, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword, her gaze sharp and unwavering as she scanned the dense, skeletal trees that clawed at the bruised sky. Elara, her nose buried in a grimoire bound in what looked suspiciously like cured dragon hide, occasionally murmured observations about ambient magical signatures, her brow furrowed in concentration. Kit, a silent, formidable shadow, brought up the rear, her massive frame a reassuring bulwark against the unseen.

He was still so new to this, to the weight of responsibility that pressed down on him with every beat of his heart. The memory of the initial monster attack on Haven, the sheer terror of seeing his people threatened, still sent shivers down his spine. He had summoned Lyra then, a desperate act born of pure instinct, and she had answered, a whirlwind of steel and fury. But this felt different. This felt like a hunt, not a random surge of monstrous hunger.
