The weight of the Sunmoner’s artifact settled in Kael’s gut, a cold, heavy stone that seemed to mirror the gnawing doubt in his own heart. It had been mere days since the crimson bloom had pulsed, since Lyra’s shimmering form had coalesced from raw energy, since the guttural roars of the Scorchers had echoed through the ruins of their settlement. Those days had been a whirlwind of desperate defense, of Lyra’s blazing sword and Elara’s sharp incantations, of Kit’s earth-shattering strength. They had driven back the initial wave, saved what little remained of their home, but the victory felt hollow, fragile.

He stood on the crumbling parapet, the wind whipping his worn tunic around him. Below, the villagers moved with a renewed, if still cautious, purpose. They were rebuilding, repairing, their faces etched with the familiar lines of hardship, but now, also with a flicker of something new – a fragile hope. They looked to him, their young leader, their unexpected protector. And that was the source of his deepest unease.

He was just Kael. He’d spent his life scavenging, patching up leaky roofs, bartering for meager supplies. He knew how to survive, how to endure. He didn’t know how to command an army of beings from other worlds. He didn’t know how to wield the power that thrummed beneath his skin, a power that felt both exhilarating and terrifying.
