Chapter 6
Guardians of the Peaks
Seeking refuge and resources, the group ventures into treacherous mountains. They encounter and summon Kit, a powerful guardian, who joins their cause after testing Kael's resolve.
The wind, a bitter sculptor, carved its way through the jagged teeth of the mountains, whipping Kael’s cloak around him like a tattered banner. Each breath was a sharp intake of icy air, burning his lungs, a stark contrast to the stale, familiar scent of ash and dust that clung to their settlement. Beside him, Lyra’s fur-lined hood was pulled tight, her eyes scanning the unforgiving terrain with an intensity that mirrored his own. Elara, bundled in layers that still seemed insufficient against the biting cold, consulted a worn parchment, her brow furrowed in concentration. Behind them, the familiar, comforting weight of the artifact, nestled securely in its pouch beneath Kael’s tunic, offered a faint, internal warmth.
“The maps indicate a pass, just beyond this ridge,” Elara announced, her voice a low murmur against the wind’s howl. “It should lead us to the lower slopes, where the vegetation is less… hostile.”
Kael grunted, his gaze fixed on the sheer cliff face ahead. Hostile was an understatement. The very rocks seemed to sneer, their granite faces scarred and broken, as if the mountains themselves were in perpetual agony. They had been traveling for days, leaving the relative safety of their ravaged valley in search of resources, a more defensible position, and answers. The artifact, a constant thrumming presence, had also been a beacon, drawing attention they couldn’t afford. Strange, mutated creatures, more aggressive and numerous than any they had encountered before, had begun to probe their defenses. Retreat, or at least a strategic repositioning, had become a necessity.
