The air in the desolate expanse tasted of dust and decay, a familiar tang that clung to Kael’s tongue. The skeletal remains of a forgotten city loomed before them, jagged teeth biting into a bruised, twilight sky. Wind howled through crumbling archways, carrying whispers that sounded suspiciously like warnings. Lyra walked beside him, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword, her eyes scanning the shadowed ruins with a warrior’s practiced vigilance. Kit, a hulking presence of granite and moss, brought up the rear, her heavy footsteps a comforting rumble against the unsettling silence.
“These ruins… they feel old,” Lyra murmured, her voice a low alto that cut through the wind. “Older than anything I’ve seen in the Scarred Lands.”
Kael nodded, clutching the Sunmoner’s artifact tighter. It pulsed faintly against his palm, a warmth that was both reassuring and unnerving. Since the attack on their settlement, since Lyra’s furious, beautiful arrival, the artifact had become an extension of himself, a conduit for powers he barely understood. But the artifact’s energy, the very thing that had allowed him to summon Lyra, also seemed to draw the horrors that plagued their world. This place, with its palpable aura of forgotten ages, felt like a beacon.
