The air in the ravaged woods hung thick and cloying, a miasma of decay and something far more sinister. Lyra, her hand resting on the hilt of her ancestral blade, felt it prickling at her skin like phantom needles. It was a scent she knew all too well, a foul perfume that clung to the edge of nightmares. Not just any monster, then. This one… this one was personal.
Kael had felt the shift in the artifact’s hum, a discordant note that had sent a tremor through his very bones. “Something’s wrong,” he’d murmured, his gaze sweeping the dense undergrowth. Elara, her brow furrowed as she traced glowing runes on the artifact’s surface, had looked up, her eyes wide. “The energy signature… it’s coalescing. Focused. And it’s heading straight for us.”
Kit, ever the silent sentinel, had already moved to Kael’s side, her massive frame a shield between him and the unseen threat. But it was Lyra who had truly recoiled. A strangled gasp escaped her lips, her knuckles white against the worn leather of her gauntlet. “No,” she breathed, her voice a mere whisper against the rustling leaves. “It cannot be.”
