Elara traced the intricate glyphs etched into the obsidian surface of the Sunmoner’s artifact. The air in her small, makeshift study within the settlement’s defenses hummed with a low thrum, a constant reminder of the power she was attempting to unravel. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the stark reality of their existence – a world scarred by catastrophe, now teetering on the brink of another, far more insidious one. Outside, the distant cries of scavengers and the wind whistling through the skeletal remains of buildings were a constant, mournful soundtrack.

For days, Elara had been immersed in the artifact's pulsating energy, her mind a whirlwind of ancient languages and forgotten histories. Lyra, ever watchful, would sometimes peer through the doorway, her armor glinting, a silent question in her steely gaze. Kael, too, would check in, his brow furrowed with a mixture of hope and apprehension. But Elara had been lost in the depths of the artifact, a solitary explorer in a sea of cosmic knowledge.

Today, however, was different. A chill, unrelated to the ever-present damp of their underground haven, snaked down her spine. The glyphs, once a fascinating puzzle, now seemed to writhe with a malevolent sentience. A profound understanding, heavy and suffocating, began to dawn. It wasn’t just the artifact that was a conduit; it was a key, and more terrifyingly, a wound.
