Ahmad, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, stepped further into the shadowed space, Layla close behind him. The thief, a woman with hands gnarled like ancient tree roots and eyes that held the weariness of a hundred sleepless nights, clutched the stolen locket to her chest. It was no grand villain, no hardened criminal, but a figure etched with a sorrow so profound it seemed to leach the light from the room.

“The locket,” Ahmad managed, his voice rougher than he intended. He reached out, his fingers instinctively seeking the familiar weight of the heirloom, only to have the artisan recoil, shielding it possessively.

“You cannot have it back,” the woman whispered, her voice a dry rustle of leaves. “Not yet.”
