The sun, a molten gold coin, began its slow descent, painting the sky in hues of bruised plum and fiery orange. Ahmad, his borrowed tunic rough against his skin, felt a familiar prickle of unease. The bustling heart of the city, a tapestry of vibrant silks, pungent spices, and the clamor of a thousand voices, was as alien to him as a distant star. Beside him, Layla moved with an effortless grace, her dark eyes, sharp as obsidian chips, scanning everything and nothing all at once.

"The thief wouldn't have gone through the main thoroughfares," she murmured, her voice a low hum against the din. "Too many eyes, too many questions. They'd seek the shadows, the places where the city breathes secrets."

Ahmad nodded, taking in the labyrinthine alleys that snaked away from the main market like dark, thirsty veins. He’d never imagined such a world existed, a world hidden just beyond the polished marble of his palace, a world teeming with a life so raw and unvarnished. The locket, his ancestor’s locket, felt like a phantom limb, a missing piece of his own history, and the artisan who had dared to steal it was now a shadow he was compelled to chase.
