A Ghostly Revelation
Exhausted and terrified, Claire collapses. The persistent voice is revealed not to be her imagination, but the ghost of a girl lost in the woods long ago.
Claire’s breath hitched, a ragged, desperate sound torn from her lungs. Her legs, once so eager to bound through the undergrowth, now felt like lead weights, refusing to carry her another step. She sank to the damp earth, the moss cool and strangely comforting against her tear-streaked cheeks. The forest, which had seemed so full of exciting secrets just hours ago, now felt like a vast, suffocating cage. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, was a malevolent whisper, a taunt from the very trees that had conspired to ensnare her.
“Hello?” she choked out, the word barely a puff of air. She’d called out to her parents, to any passing traveler, but only the mocking echo of her own fear had answered. Now, a different sound pierced the gloom, a sound that had been there all along, a thread woven into the tapestry of her mounting terror. It was the voice. Not a whisper anymore, but a clear, distinct sound, tinged with an ancient sadness.
“Claire…”
