Panic Sets In
Night falls, and Claire's bravado crumbles into fear. She frantically tries to escape the disorienting woods, but every direction leads her in circles.
The last sliver of sun, a defiant orange against the bruised purple of the sky, winked out. Claire, who had been strutting through the woods with the swagger of a seasoned explorer just hours ago, suddenly felt very small. And very, very foolish. The trees, which had seemed like majestic guardians of secrets, now loomed like skeletal fingers, their branches clawing at the deepening gloom. The air, once crisp and inviting, now hung heavy and damp, smelling of decay and things long forgotten.
"Okay, okay, so maybe a *tiny* bit of a miscalculation," she muttered, her voice a pathetic squeak against the rising symphony of crickets and unseen scurrying things. Her bravado, that glorious, unshakeable fortress of self-assurance, was crumbling faster than a stale biscuit. She spun around, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Which way had she come? Every direction looked identical. A wall of gnarled trunks and whispering leaves.
"This is ridiculous," she huffed, trying to reignite a spark of her usual defiance. "I'm not lost. I'm… strategically repositioning." The words tasted like ash in her mouth. The whispering voice, the one that had been a tantalizing mystery earlier, was now a persistent, chilling murmur that seemed to slither through the trees, coiling around her like a spectral serpent. "Claire… Claire…"
