Chapter 17
The Elder's Nod
The Town Elder observes Claire's transformation with quiet approval, perhaps recalling his own youthful encounters with the forest's mysteries.
Old Man Hemlock, a man whose wrinkles seemed to have been etched by the very wind that whispered through the ancient oaks, sat on his usual bench outside the general store. The afternoon sun, a weak, watery thing this time of year, cast long shadows that stretched like weary fingers across the dusty main street. He’d seen a lot of suns rise and set over this town, and he’d seen a lot of young’uns come and go, each with their own brand of spirited foolishness. But this one, Claire, she’d always been a special case. A firecracker wrapped in stubbornness, that girl.
He’d watched her stomp out of town a few days ago, her chin held high, her eyes blazing with the kind of defiance that usually preceded a spectacular face-plant. The forest, of course. Always the forest. He’d given her the sternest of warnings, the kind that usually made even the most headstrong child pause. He’d spoken of the shadows that swallowed light, the paths that vanished like mist, the whispers that could lead a soul astray. He’d even hinted, just a tad, at things he’d seen himself, youthful indiscretions of his own that had left him with a healthy respect for the woods’ darker moods. But Claire, bless her obstinate heart, had just tossed her hair and marched off as if he were spouting nonsense about talking squirrels.
And then, the silence. A few days of unnerving quiet from the girl’s direction. No boisterous laughter echoing from the tavern, no hurried footsteps clattering on the boardwalk, no exasperated sighs from her mother. It was a silence that spoke louder than any town crier. Old Man Hemlock had felt it in his bones, a familiar chill that had nothing to do with the autumn air. He’d seen that particular kind of silence before, the kind that followed a reckless plunge into the unknown.
