The forest, which had hours ago seemed like a malevolent, tangled beast intent on swallowing her whole, now felt different. It wasn't exactly friendly, not by a long shot, but the sharp edges of terror had blurred into a dull ache of respect. Claire’s boots crunched on fallen leaves, each step a small, deliberate act of defiance against the woods’ earlier attempts to break her. She wasn't skipping, not anymore. Each stride was measured, her gaze sweeping from the gnarled roots that snaked across the path to the impossibly tall, silent sentinels of bark and leaf above. The air, once thick with the scent of decay and something else, something unnervingly *other*, now carried the clean, sharp tang of pine and damp earth. It was still the same forest, but Claire was not the same girl who had blundered into its depths with a swagger and a "hail-to-the-chief" attitude.

She’d seen the ghost girl, of course. Seen her fade, a shimmering wisp of regret and finally, peace, into the very fabric of the woods. The spectral child, once a terrifying whisper and then a desperate plea, had dissolved with a final, grateful smile that had somehow lodged itself deep in Claire’s chest. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling, not exactly, but it was… real. And the reality of it had stripped away Claire’s bravado like a harsh wind peeling bark from a tree.

The path, blessedly, seemed to be more cooperative now. The trees stood straighter, less like a conspiracy and more like… well, trees. The shadows still lay long and deep, but they no longer held the menacing promise of hidden eyes or grasping hands. Claire found herself humming a tuneless little song, a nervous habit she’d picked up from her mother when she was worried. It wasn’t the same song she’d hummed when she’d first entered the woods, full of bravado and a dash of defiance. This one was softer, more hesitant.
