Claire, knees scraped and spirit thoroughly humbled, stared at the spectral girl. The ghost, who’d been less a terrifying specter and more a particularly persistent, shimmering inconvenience until mere moments ago, now looked… a bit sad. And translucent. Very, very translucent. Claire, who had entered the woods with the swagger of a conquering hero and was now contemplating whether moss was a viable food source, felt a strange pang. It wasn’t quite pity, more like a dawning, uncomfortable recognition that her stubbornness had landed not just herself, but also this ethereal damsel in distress, in a rather pickle.

“So,” Claire began, her voice raspy from a combination of fear and the distinct lack of hydration, “you’re… stuck. Like, forever stuck?”

The ghost girl nodded, a movement that sent ripples through her form, as if she were made of smoke caught in a gentle breeze. “The forest… it holds me. Ever since… well, ever since I was as foolish as you.” A faint, almost imperceptible sigh escaped her. “I thought I knew better, too. That the stories were just old wives’ tales to keep children in line. But the whispers… they pull you in, don’t they? And then… you can’t find your way back.”
