Driven by a need to understand herself and Phantaisa, Peacock Cat leaves her home. Her journey is one of self-discovery, seeking answers beyond the village.
The familiar scent of her mother’s fur, a comforting blend of milk and sun-warmed dust, no longer felt like an anchor. Instead, it tugged at a deeper current within Peacock Cat, a restless tide that whispered of horizons yet unseen. The confines of the cozy barn, once a haven, now felt like a gilded cage. Her siblings, a tumble of soft, ordinary fur, chased dust motes in sunbeams, their playful squeaks a stark contrast to the silent questions that echoed in her own heart. She watched them, a pang of something akin to sadness, but mostly a fierce, burgeoning independence, stirring within her. The fear she saw in the villagers’ eyes, the hushed warnings that followed her mother’s every meow, the way the Elder Human’s gaze would narrow to slits when she dared to venture near the edge of the woods – it all coalesced into a single, undeniable truth: she did not belong here, not truly.
The Phantaisa. The word itself was a shadow, a chill that slithered through the air whenever it was spoken. Peacock Cat didn’t fully grasp its meaning, not in the way the humans did, with their wide, frightened eyes and their tales of strange growths and stranger births. But she felt its presence, a subtle hum beneath her own fur, a resonance that set her apart. It was the reason for the villagers’ distance, the reason for her own gnawing loneliness. Her mother, bless her warm, beating heart, had tried. She’d licked Peacock Cat’s fur until it gleamed, nudged her towards the milk bowl, and purred with a fierce protectiveness. But even her mother’s love couldn’t erase the fundamental difference, the shimmer of blue and white that set her apart, the impossibly curled fur that trapped the world in its intricate loops, the tail that unfurled with a grace that echoed the proud birds of
