Mother's Gentle Paw
Mother Cat, though worried, offers unwavering love. Her protective instincts are a quiet comfort, a reminder of belonging amidst growing isolation.
Mother Cat watched her litter with a soft gaze, her heart a warm, humming thing in her chest. Five tiny bundles of fur, each a miracle, each a testament to life’s enduring magic. Yet, even as she nudged and licked and purred, a sliver of unease, a faint shadow, clung to her thoughts. It was the smallest one, the one with the sapphire and pearl coat, the one who unfurled a tail like a kingfisher’s plume when she stretched. Peacock Cat.
The other kittens tumbled and squabbled, their tiny paws batting at Mother Cat’s whiskers, their squeaks a cheerful symphony. They were all soft fluff and innocent hunger, their world confined to the cozy warmth of their nest. But Peacock Cat… Peacock Cat was different. Her fur, a tapestry of the deepest midnight blue and the purest, brightest white, shimmered under the dim light of the barn. And her tail, oh, her tail! It wasn’t the stubby, twitching appendage of her siblings. It was long, elegant, and when it moved, it fanned out in iridescent waves, catching the light and scattering it like fallen stars.
Mother Cat would lick Peacock Cat’s fur, her rough tongue smoothing the impossibly soft curls. The sensation was unlike any other kitten’s coat, a cloud of spun moonlight and shadowed sapphire. It was beautiful, breathtakingly so, and yet, it carried a strange scent, a hint of something ancient and wild that Mother Cat couldn’t quite place. It was a scent that made her fur prickle, not with fear, but with a primal awareness.
