The air in the small village hung thick and heavy, not with the usual scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, but with a palpable undercurrent of dread. It had been weeks since the whispers of Phantaisa had solidified into a tangible fear, a shadow cast by the very existence of Peacock Cat. Today, that fear found its voice, sharp and brittle, in the form of the Elder Human.
The Elder, a figure whose weathered face seemed etched with the anxieties of generations, stood before Mother Cat’s humble dwelling. Their voice, raspy with age and conviction, carried across the hushed gathering of villagers. “This… this creature,” they declared, their gaze fixed on the patch of sun where Peacock Cat, still a mere kitten but already possessing an undeniable aura of otherness, basked with her siblings, “is a blight upon us. A harbinger of the Phantaisa.”
Mother Cat, her fur bristling with a protective instinct that transcended any fear, emerged from the shadows of her den. She met the Elder’s gaze, her own eyes a steady, unwavering emerald. She had seen the fear in their faces, the way they averted their eyes from her unique kitten, the way their hushed conversations always seemed to end when Peacock Cat drew near. But this open accusation, this demand for banishment, was a new and terrifying escalation.
