Chapter 14
The Elder's Doubt
Witnessing Peacock Cat's actions, the Elder Human begins to question their ingrained fear. The undeniable proof of her potential good challenges their prejudice.
The Elder Human watched from the edge of the village, a knot of apprehension tightening in their chest. They had seen it, of course, they had seen the impossible. The way the child, that small, fearless creature, had stumbled near the old well, their tiny hands reaching for a fallen apple, and then, the sudden, dizzying lurch of a spirit about to depart their fragile form. And then, the blur of azure and pearl, a flash of iridescent tail, and the child was safe, clutched gently in the peculiar feline’s arms.
It defied everything the Elder Human believed, everything they had preached. Phantaisa. The word itself was a curse, a harbinger of unnatural change, of the terrifying beauty that could bloom from within a human body, only to birth something… else. They had warned of the creature, the one with the peacock’s tail, the one whose very existence was a testament to the disease’s insidious reach. They had painted her as a harbinger of doom, a living embodiment of the fear that had gripped the village for generations.
But the child. The child had been on the brink. The Elder Human had felt the shift in the air, the faint, sickly scent that sometimes preceded the onset of the Phantaisa’s more aggressive manifestations. They had seen the child’s eyes glaze over, a vacant, unfocused look that spoke of a spirit already beginning to fray. And the creature, the Peacock Cat, had intervened. Not with malice, not with the predatory instinct of a wild animal, but with a swiftness that bordered on grace, a tenderness that belied her strange appearance.
