A Test of Courage
A Phantaisa outbreak threatens the village. Peacock Cat, despite her fear of rejection, must decide whether to intervene and reveal her growing abilities.
The air in the village, usually alive with the murmur of daily life and the distant bleating of sheep, had turned thick and heavy. A hushed panic, like a cold fog, had settled over the thatched roofs and cobblestone paths. It had started subtly, a few villagers complaining of an odd, persistent ache in their bellies, a strange fullness that no amount of food could satisfy. Then came the whispers, hushed and fearful, of white, pearlescent forms stirring beneath the skin, a terrifying echo of the tales that had kept Peacock Cat and her kind at bay for so long. Phantaisa. The word itself was a curse, a harbinger of the unnatural, the unknown, the terrifying.
Peacock Cat, nestled in the soft straw of her mother’s accustomed napping spot, felt the shift in the air as keenly as any human. Her sensitive ears twitched, catching the agitated tones of voices that usually held a friendly lilt. She saw the way the villagers averted their gazes, their eyes darting past her to the edges of the forest, as if expecting something monstrous to emerge from the shadows. And she felt the familiar prickle of fear, a cold dread that coiled in her stomach, reminding her of why she was so often alone. She was the source of their fear, the living embodiment of the disease they so desperately tried to ignore.
Her siblings, now sleek and agile young cats themselves, would sometimes venture to the edge of the village, their curious natures tugging them towards the human dwellings. But they always returned with tales of averted gazes and hushed pronouncements, reinforcing the invisible barrier that separated them from the two-legged folk. Peacock Cat, however, had always felt a deeper pull, a yearning to understand the humans who had created her name, who feared her touch, and who, she suspected, held the key to her own mysterious existence.
