Chapter 9
Kelly's Drawings
Lilly sees Kelly's preserved drawings, the very animals that once lived. She feels an uncanny connection to the vibrant, imaginative creatures.
The air in the small, hushed room was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something faintly floral, like pressed wildflowers. Lilly stood on tiptoe, her breath catching in her throat. Before her, carefully arranged on a series of aged wooden shelves, were the drawings. Not just any drawings, but *her* drawings. The drawings of Kelly.
Her mother had led her here, to a quiet annex of the community hall, a place rarely visited, filled with the artifacts of their shared history. It was a space that felt both sacred and a little sorrowful, a testament to a life lived so brightly, and so briefly. Lilly’s heart pounded a rhythm against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and awe. She had imagined these drawings, of course, had seen them in the faded photographs and heard the stories, but to see them now, laid out before her, was an entirely different experience.
The first drawing was of a creature Lilly had never seen before, yet somehow recognized. It was a fox, but not quite. Its fur was the colour of twilight, a deep indigo, and its tail was tipped with a plume of shimmering silver. Its eyes, rendered with a startling intensity, were the colour of emeralds, and seemed to hold a mischievous spark. Lilly felt an almost physical tug, a yearning to reach out and touch the paper, to feel the texture of that twilight fur, to hear the rustle of that silver tail.
