The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful visitor, felt a little subdued as it filtered through the lace curtains of their small cottage. Lilly sat at the worn kitchen table, tracing the grain of the wood with a restless finger. The silence between her and her mother, usually a comfortable companion, had stretched into an uncomfortable expanse since their last conversation about the phantaisa culture. Her mother, Sarah, was meticulously polishing a silver teapot, her movements precise and almost too deliberate. Each swipe of the cloth seemed to carry the weight of unspoken words, of a decision held just out of reach.

She’d described the intricate, hand-stitched symbols on the phantaisa cloaks, the melodies sung at their gatherings that seemed to echo the rustle of leaves and the murmur of streams.

“Mom,” Lilly began again, her voice soft but determined, “it’s not just about Kelly. It’s about… what she represented. And why people still gather, still remember her, so many years later. It feels important.”
