The air in their small kitchen, usually alive with the clatter of breakfast dishes and Lilly’s incessant questions, felt heavy with a different kind of energy. It was the quiet hum of understanding, a subtle shift that had begun days ago, like a gentle tide turning. Lilly’s mother, Sarah, watched her daughter across the worn wooden table, a half-eaten piece of toast growing cold on her own plate. Lilly wasn’t sketching furiously in her notebook, nor was she launching into a new theory about Kelly’s wondrous abilities. Instead, her gaze was fixed somewhere beyond the window, a soft, wistful look in her bright blue eyes.

“What are you thinking about, sweetheart?” Sarah asked, her voice a little softer than usual, a touch of the maternal warmth that had been tinged with worry for so long now finding its natural flow.

Lilly blinked, her attention returning to the kitchen, to her mother. A small, almost shy smile touched her lips. “I was just… thinking about how nice it was at the Elder’s garden yesterday. It felt like… like everyone knew each other, even though I’d never met most of them before.”
