Lilly clutched the worn, leather-bound sketchbook to her chest, its familiar weight a small comfort against the growing unease in her stomach. The air in the Phantaisa gathering hall, usually alive with the gentle hum of shared reverence, felt thick and strange today. Her mother had agreed to accompany her, a silent, steady presence beside her, but even her mother’s reassuring hand on Lilly’s shoulder couldn’t entirely dispel the prickle of doubt that had begun to bloom in Lilly’s mind.

They had arrived a little later than usual, drawn by the promise of a special sharing session, one that the Elder had hinted would shed further light on the deeper meanings of their Phantaisa traditions. But as they entered, the usual serene atmosphere was replaced by a boisterous energy, a kind of performative enthusiasm that felt jarringly out of place. A group of individuals, their faces flushed and their voices amplified, were gathered around a table laden with brightly colored trinkets and embroidered cloths. They weren’t speaking of Kelly, or of the gentle magic that had once infused their village, but of profits, of eager buyers from the neighboring towns, of how the 'Phantaisa aesthetic' was becoming all the rage.

Lilly’s gaze drifted to a stall near the back, where a man with slicked-back hair and a too-wide smile was hawking crudely drawn animal figures, each one lacking the spark, the inherent life, that had characterized Kelly’s creations. These were lifeless imitations, mere shadows of the creatures that had once roamed their dreams. He called them "Phantaisa Wonders," and his voice boomed with an almost desperate salesmanship.
