The late afternoon sun, a gentle, buttery hue, cast long shadows across the living room, softening the edges of the familiar furniture. Lilly sat cross-legged on the worn rug, her fingers tracing the faded floral pattern, a restless energy buzzing beneath her skin. Her mother, her brow furrowed in a way that Lilly had come to recognize as deep thought, sat in her usual armchair, a half-finished cup of tea cooling beside her. The air between them was thick with unspoken questions, a quiet hum of anticipation that had settled since their agreement.

“Mom,” Lilly began, her voice soft, almost a whisper, “you said you remembered something… about when Kelly was alive.”

Her mother sighed, a sound like rustling leaves. She closed her eyes for a moment, and Lilly watched the subtle shift in her expression, the way her lips parted slightly as if tasting a distant memory. “It’s… it’s like trying to catch smoke, Lilly. Fragments. Images that flicker and fade before you can really grasp them.” She opened her eyes, her gaze distant. “There was a day… I was walking near the old woods, the ones behind Kelly’s house. The air was heavy, almost humming. And I saw her, Kelly. She was sitting under the great oak, the one with the twisted branches.”
