Chapter 17
The Artist's Touch
Lilly examines Emily's plush more closely. She notices a faint, almost invisible stitching pattern that resembles a constellation, a detail Emily might have loved.
Lilly’s fingers traced the worn velvet of Emily’s plush. It was an ordinary teddy bear, a comforting, familiar shape that had sat at the heart of so many red triangles, surrounded by the soft glow of eight candles. But to Lilly, nothing about Emily, or the traditions that bloomed in her memory, was ever truly ordinary. Her mother had allowed her to hold the plush for a moment, a rare concession that had sent a thrill of anticipation through Lilly. She turned it over and over, her gaze sharp, her mind already piecing together fragments of the mystery that enveloped the Phantaisa Culture.
The bear itself was simple – a soft, brown body, button eyes that seemed to hold a gentle, knowing gaze, and a stitched smile that was more of a gentle curve than a definite expression. It was the kind of toy a child would cherish, a silent confidant for whispered secrets and shared dreams. But Lilly was looking for more than just a toy. She was looking for a clue, a thread that would lead her deeper into the heart of Emily’s story.
Her mother watched her, a quiet presence beside her, her own gaze distant, perhaps lost in thoughts Lilly couldn't yet fathom. The air in the gathering space, usually alive with the murmur of voices and the soft rustle of movement, was hushed, as if holding its breath in deference to the memory of the girl who had inspired it all. Lilly, however, was oblivious to the reverent stillness. Her focus was entirely on the plush, her small brow furrowed in concentration.
