Chapter 13
A Whispered Conversation
Lilly overhears a hushed conversation between two elders about 'the boy who understood the whispers.' The mention of whispers sparks a memory of Emily's gift.
The air in the gathering square hummed with a gentle, almost imperceptible energy, a soft murmur of voices and the rustle of leaves from the ancient oak trees that ringed the clearing. Lilly, her small hands tucked into the pockets of her jumper, felt a familiar prickle of curiosity, the same sensation that often accompanied the unraveling of a particularly knotty mystery. She had been observing the gathering for a good hour, her eyes darting from the carefully arranged red triangles, each crowned with its plush effigy of Emily, to the faces of the people who moved among them. There was a quiet reverence in their movements, a shared understanding that Lilly was still trying to decipher.
Her mother, sensing Lilly’s restless energy, had given her a gentle smile and a nod towards a cluster of older women seated on a low stone wall, their faces etched with the wisdom of many years. “Go on, then, sweetie,” she’d whispered, her voice warm. “See if you can learn something new.”
Lilly padded over, her footsteps soft on the mossy ground. She found a spot near the edge of the group, close enough to hear, but not so close as to seem intrusive. The women’s conversation, which had been a general murmur of reminiscences about Emily, now seemed to be shifting, becoming more hushed, more intimate. Lilly strained her ears, catching snippets of words that danced at the edge of her understanding.
