The bus, a rumbling metal beast breathing dust, finally shuddered to a halt. Elara Elena, all seventeen years of her and every ounce of her unwavering spirit, stepped out onto a shimmering expanse of sand. Mexico. It was everything the tales had promised and nothing like the gentle green hills of home. The sun, a molten orb in a sky of relentless blue, beat down with an intensity that stole the breath from her lungs. The air was thick with heat, carrying the scent of dry earth, distant livestock, and something else… something wild and untamed.

Her parents’ worried faces, etched with a familiar blend of love and apprehension, flickered in her mind. They had pleaded, reasoned, even despaired, but Elara’s decision, once made, was as solid as the ancient stones she sometimes imagined building her fairytale castles from. The silence was profound, broken only by the rustle of wind through dry grass and the distant, mournful cry of some unseen creature. Elara took a deep breath, the heat prickling her skin. This was it. Her chance to be special, to be more than just Elara Elena, the girl who lost herself in stories.
