Mina’s breath hitched, a tiny puff of mist in the cool cavern air. The sheer, unending stretch of the passage ahead seemed to mock their dwindling energy. Each step felt heavier than the last, the glittering walls offering no comfort, only a cold, silent witness to their struggle. Jolley stumbled beside her, her small hand gripping Mina’s tightly, her usual bubbly chatter replaced by a soft, weary sigh. The thought of turning back, of admitting defeat, was a bitter taste in Mina’s mouth. But the cave… it just kept going.
Suddenly, a memory flickered in Mina’s mind, sharp and clear as the crystals surrounding them. Grandma Elena’s voice, warm and rich like honey, weaving tales on cool evenings. Mina remembered one story in particular, about a little seed that refused to give up, pushing its way through hard, unyielding earth, reaching for the sun. Grandma Elena had said, her eyes twinkling, “Even the smallest seed, my dears, holds the strength of the mountains within it, if only it has the courage to believe.”
“Jolley,” Mina whispered, her voice hoarse but steady. “Remember Grandma Elena’s stories?”
