Mina's Secret Hope

The cave air, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sweet and faintly metallic like crushed berries, pressed in on Mina. Jolley, ever the optimist, bounced beside her, her small hand clutched tight in Mina’s. The glowing moss on the cave walls cast an ethereal, shifting light, painting their faces in hues of emerald and sapphire. It was beautiful, undeniably so, but also… vast. And the deeper they went, the more the vastness seemed to swallow any courage they’d managed to muster.

“Are we there yet, Mina?” Jolley’s voice, usually a bright chirp, was a little softer now, a little more tentative. She’d been so excited when they’d first stumbled upon the cave entrance, her eyes wide with the promise of the Crystal Tree. Now, the novelty was beginning to wear thin against the sheer, unending trek.

Mina squeezed her sister’s hand. “Not yet, Jo. But we’re getting closer. I can feel it.” She said it with more conviction than she felt. Every turn of the winding passage looked the same, every cluster of glowing crystals seemed a repetition of the last. The giant crystal lizard had been a startling hurdle, its snores rumbling like distant thunder, but they had tiptoed past, hearts pounding, and it had merely shifted its massive, crystalline coils in its sleep. Then there were the skittering, beetle-like creatures with iridescent shells that clicked and whirred, harmless but unnerving, and the delicate, bell-shaped flowers that pulsed with a soft light, their pollen a vibrant, almost alarming shade of indigo. Grandma Elena had warned them about poisonous plants, and Mina’s mind, ever practical, had cataloged each new discovery with a silent mental note of caution.
