Echoing Footsteps
Every sound they make echoes endlessly. Jolley's fear of the dark resurfaces, but Mina's steady presence reassures her. They learn to move quietly.
The air inside the Crystal Cave was different. It wasn't just cooler, or damp, or filled with the strange, sweet scent of the glowing moss. It was alive with sound, or rather, the absence of it, and the way every tiny noise bounced back, magnified and distorted. Every scuff of their worn sandals on the crystal-strewn floor, every rustle of their cotton dresses, seemed to multiply, creating a chorus of whispers that followed them, an echo of their own presence.
"Shhh," Mina hissed, though her voice, barely above a breath, still seemed to ricochet off the glittering walls. She held a finger to her lips, her eyes wide as she tried to decipher the shapes in the shifting, phosphorescent light. The darkness here was not a simple void; it was a tapestry woven with shadows that danced and stretched, playing tricks on their vision.
Jolley, usually so full of chatter and boundless energy, was unusually quiet. Her small hand was clasped tightly in Mina's, her knuckles white. She hugged herself, her gaze darting nervously into the deeper recesses of the cave, where the light seemed to thin and wane. The urban legend, which had seemed so exciting and full of promise just hours ago, now felt a little more… real. And a little more frightening.
