Mellidy scrambled to his paws, the rough asphalt scraping against his fur. The papers Annabella had been clutching were scattered around them like fallen autumn leaves, a rainbow confetti against the grey pavement. He blinked, his vision clearing from the shock of the collision. The unicorn stood before him, her colorful mane a vibrant splash against the morning light, a bright blue bowtie perched jauntily over one ear and another peeking out from behind her hindquarters. She was remarkably the same size as him, a comforting thought for the ten-year-old polar bear.

"Oh my god!" Annabella had exclaimed, her voice a melodic chime that echoed in the sudden quiet. Now, she bent low, her movements quick and efficient, gathering the scattered pages.

"I'm okay," Mellidy managed, his voice a little rough. He dusted himself off, feeling a strange mix of embarrassment and fascination. He’d never met a unicorn before, not in real life. They were creatures of legend, whispered about in hushed tones, much like the mythical heroes he so admired.
