Chapter 16
Elara's Sacrifice
Facing a powerful manifestation of Invictus, Elara uses her ancient magic to shield the others, expending her life force. Her sacrifice buys Kaelen crucial time, solidifying his resolve.
The air thrummed with a malevolent energy, a dissonant chord struck against the very fabric of existence. It was a palpable force, thick with the scent of ozone and decay, and it radiated from the grotesque figure coalescing before them. Invictus. Not as a singular entity, but as a swarm, a crackling vortex of shadow and violet light, tendrils of raw, unstable power lashing out like a thousand hungry serpents. Kaelen felt a primal urge to flee, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Beside him, Borin’s knuckles were white where he gripped his axe, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Even Elara, usually a beacon of calm, seemed to strain against the oppressive aura, her eyes wide with a dawning horror.
“It’s… stronger than I anticipated,” Elara breathed, her voice barely a whisper, yet it cut through the unnatural silence that had fallen around them. The usual sounds of the world – the rustle of leaves, the chirping of unseen insects, the distant murmur of the wind – were all silenced, swallowed by the encroaching darkness. “This is not mere shadow, Kaelen. This is… corruption given form.”
Invictus pulsed, a silent scream of pure malice. The ground beneath their feet began to crack, fissures snaking outward as if the earth itself recoiled from its touch. The violet energy coalesced, forming a grotesque, vaguely humanoid shape, its form constantly shifting, shimmering with an infernal light. Eyes, burning with an ancient, insatiable hunger, fixed upon them. Not just upon Kaelen, but upon all of them, as if it could taste their fear, their hope, their very essence.
