Chapter 14
The Rift of Shadows
Invictus opens a tear in reality, spewing forth corrupted entities. Kaelen and his companions must defend a critical nexus point from being overrun by this encroaching darkness.
The air, once crisp with the scent of pine and damp earth, grew heavy, thick with an unnatural chill. A low hum, like the grinding of colossal stones, vibrated through Kaelen’s bones, a resonance that was both alien and disturbingly familiar. He gripped the hilt of his sword, the cool metal a grounding sensation against his clammy palm. Around him, Borin grunted, his massive frame tense, his eyes scanning the rapidly darkening treeline. Elara stood a few paces ahead, her staff held at the ready, ancient runes flaring with a soft, protective light around her.

From its depths, a cacophony of screeches and guttural roars spilled forth, a tide of corrupted forms spilling onto the forest floor. These were not creatures of flesh and blood, but twisted mockeries, shadows given form, their eyes burning with a cold, predatory hunger.
“Invictus,” Elara breathed, her voice tight with a dread Kaelen had only heard in hushed whispers during their studies of the Starfall’s darker legends. “He has opened a rift.”
