Elder Maeve's Doubts
Back in the village, Elder Maeve voices her concerns about Elara and the traveler. She fears the unknown powers Elara might unleash, remembering old warnings about those who wield unnatural gifts.
Elder Maeve’s eyes, usually as sharp and clear as a winter sky, were clouded with a familiar unease. She sat on the worn wooden bench outside her cottage, her gnarled fingers twisting a sprig of dried lavender. The scent, meant to be calming, did little to soothe the knot in her stomach. Elara and the Traveler had returned, not with triumphant news, but with an air of deep thought that settled over them like a shroud. Elara, though her face held a new resilience, still instinctively touched the edge of her hair, as if to shield the star on her forehead from prying eyes. And the Traveler… the Traveler remained an enigma, their presence a ripple in the ordinarily placid waters of their village.
“They are back,” Maeve murmured, her voice barely a whisper against the rustling leaves of the ancient oak. A young woman, her arms laden with freshly baked bread, paused on the path.
“Yes, Elder,” she replied, her gaze flicking towards Elara, who was speaking softly with the Traveler near the well. “And Elara… she seems different.”
