Elara, with the traveler as her guide, leaves her village. Their quest is to find a place where she can learn to control her burgeoning abilities and understand the true nature of her mark.
The early morning mist clung to the thatched roofs of Oakhaven like a damp blanket, muffling the sounds of the waking village. Elara, her heart a nervous flutter against her ribs, pulled the worn scarf tighter around her head, the familiar scratch of the wool a small comfort against the enormity of what she was about to do. Beside her, the Traveler stood as still as the ancient oak at the village edge, their cloak the colour of twilight and their face a study in serene mystery.
“Are you ready, Elara?” the Traveler’s voice was a gentle current, carrying no judgment, only quiet anticipation.
Elara swallowed, the lump in her throat feeling as large as the village millstone. Ready? She was terrified. She was exhilarated. She was a swirling storm of emotions she’d spent years trying to keep bottled up. But beneath the fear, a new, stubborn ember glowed – the desire to finally understand, to finally *be* something more than the girl with the mark of ill fortune.
