A Glimpse of the Enemy
Elara and the traveler encounter a manifestation of the looming threat. It's a being of shadow and malice, confirming the danger Elara is in and the importance of her developing powers.
The air grew heavy, thick with a chill that had nothing to do with the fading afternoon sun. Elara pulled her cloak tighter, her fingers brushing the familiar, raised edges of the star on her forehead. Even through the thick fabric, she could feel its presence, a constant reminder of her otherness. Beside her, the Traveler moved with a grace that seemed to ripple through the very air, their presence a steady counterpoint to the growing unease.
"Do you feel it?" the Traveler's voice was a soft murmur, barely disturbing the stillness.
Elara nodded, her gaze sweeping over the gnarled trees that lined the path. They seemed to lean away from something, their branches twisted into contorted shapes, as if recoiling from an unseen horror. "It's like the air is… wrong. Heavy."
