The Shadowy Threat
Strange omens appear: wilting crops, unnatural storms. A shadowy presence begins to loom, drawn to the awakening power within Elara, seeking to claim or destroy it.
The air in Oakhaven had grown heavy, a thick blanket of unease settling over the usually vibrant village. It began subtly, a whisper of wrongness that prickled the skin. The vibrant green of the wheat fields, once the pride of the valley, started to fade, an unnatural yellow creeping in from the edges. Then came the storms. Not the cleansing, life-giving rains they were accustomed to, but furious, bruising downpours that lashed at the thatched roofs and churned the earth into muddy rivers. The wind, too, howled with a new, mournful sound, tearing at the ancient oaks that gave the village its name.
Elara, her hand instinctively covering the star on her forehead, felt the shift most acutely. It was as if the very air hummed with a discordant energy, a resonance that vibrated deep within her bones. The Traveler, their face a mask of calm concern, had spoken of such things. “The awakening of great power,” they had said, their voice a low murmur against the rising wind, “can ripple through the natural world, drawing attention from those who covet it, or fear it.”
One evening, as Elara sat by the hearth, the firelight casting dancing shadows on the worried faces of her neighbors, a sudden chill swept through the room, extinguishing the flames in an instant. A collective gasp rose from the villagers. Elder Maeve, her face etched with a familiar blend of suspicion and fear, clutched her shawl tighter. “This is no ordinary tempest,” she declared, her voice trembling slightly. “This… this is something else.”
